Artist Statement

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a2c0.jpg

I am a dance artist; I believe in consistently investigating the body and the experiences that our bodies retain. Our experiences and emotions drive our body’s relationship to internal and external spaces. I am often inspired by the way people live, the way we move, the way we express our emotions, and the way people interact with one another. I like to create through a lens of action, reaction, and transformation. Experiences, communication, environment, and energies are key markers that personalize my style. It is within these experiences that I find opportunities for understanding my path and personal growth.

My goal as an artist is to use dance as a form of meditative movement. Life consists of many experiences, and it is hard to conceptualize why we are positioned in certain situations. Dance allows me to take the time to explore these circumstances, assembling my thoughts and emotions. Some days I dance to experience joy and other days I move just to “feel something”. I persistently listen to my body and my surroundings to detect the effects of everyday life. The consideration of movement inside and outside of the studio is especially important to how I work as an artist. I deem you must bring your whole self into the space when dancing: dancer, and human.

My work is based on ballet and modern aesthetics. I typically work with the idea of finding the “ease within movement” which is the fundamental of release technique. I also like to use energy and momentum to create dynamic movement which correlates with principles of counter technique. I work by improvising and allowing new ideas and movements to emanate out of my body. This allows my dancing to be as natural as possible as I embody my actions and reactions that have transformed me into who I am today.

I want my work to be meaningful to the dancers and the audience which means that it must be compelling, but also personal. Through researching health, listening, and investigating bodies, I want the audience to feel empowered to let their experiences be heard. My work is bringing awareness to the physical body, but also your internal self. Listening to the body is vital as it is a vessel that carries all of our personal experiences. The goal of my work is to connect to my audience through the exploration of these conditions and experiences, to resonate with their soul.
